Everyone loves a property with a story, and the Mayhurst Inn offers exactly that. The Inn boasts a rich and fascinating history of its own. The Mayhurst Inn was constructed just two years before the Civil War began. Built in the glamorous Italianate style, many praised it as the most fashionable home in Orange County at the time. The mansion was owned by Colonel John Willis, the great nephew of President James Madison, and served mainly as a farm producing bountiful harvests and raising a variety of livestock. When the Civil War roiled through the South, the Mayhurst Inn played a pivotal role. General Stonewall Jackson spent the night at the home in 1962 and in the winter of 1963-1964, 18,000 Confederate troops pitched their tents on the property grounds. General Hill even chose to baptize his daughter on these grounds and the ceremony was attended by General Lee. For a more detailed account of the property's history, click here.
