Situated just 4 miles from James Madison’s Montpelier, Mayhurst is the perfect place to stay while visiting and enjoying the beauty and history of our 4th President’s home. The original owner of Mayhurst, John Willis, was a great nephew of James and Dolley Madison and spent much of his youth at Montpelier visiting with his great uncle and with Thomas Jefferson, who was a frequent guest at Montpelier. John Willis and several members of his family are buried at Montpelier.
For its historic and architectural merit, Mayhurst is registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark and is a National Registry of Historic Places home. Mayhurst is also listed as one of the historic properties on The Journey Through Hallowed Ground™ and is a convenient stopping place when taking the “Journey.”
Our guests truly enjoy the quiet and serenity of this historic and romantic antebellum mansion and plantation. They sip tea or wine in our library, or on our lovely veranda or on the spacious patio.
Some simply relax in multiple sitting areas or sway in the double hammock. Others sit under the spreading ash tree by the pond, bird watching or fishing, and catching glimpses of fox or deer on our 37 acres. All are fascinated with the elegant yet fanciful Italianate Victorian design of the Manor House.
Many of our guests also visit Jefferson's Monticello, Monroe’s Ashlawn, or tour Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Four of the top five Virginia wineries are within 20 miles and offer daily tastings. Other guests immerse themselves in the seven nearby Civil War battlefields including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and The Wilderness. Still others enjoy the local art and antique shopping here on the eastern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains or take a Hot Air Balloon trip – right from Mayhurst!
Mayhurst is a rare and stunning 9200 Sq. Ft. Italianate Victorian 4-story plantation manor house with rooftop tower, and was truly John Willis' "full tide of prosperity"
History accorded them several illustrious guests, including: General "Stonewall" Jackson, General R.E. Lee and General A.P.Hill. General Hill commanded III Corps of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia with his headquarters at Mayhurst during the winter of 1863-64. One of LTG Hill’s Daughters, Lucy Lee Hill, was christened in the Mayhurst Parlor on May 1, 1864, held by her godfather, General Robert E. Lee. This scene was recently memorialized in a painting, entitled Tender is the Heart, by the renowned historical artist, Mort Kunstler. A Glecee copy of this painting hangs in the Mayhurst parlor where the baptism took place.
When you tour the grounds of Mayhurst, across the manicured lawns, on the 2 miles of mowed paths, past multiple gardens, and through fields and old growth forest, or fish in our pond, you will be walking where 18,000 confederate troops spent the winter of 1863-64. History, Romance and Luxury abound at Mayhurst.
